Title I @ Lockhart
Title I, the cornerstone of the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965, reauthorized as No Child Left Behind in 2001 (NCLB), is the largest federal educational program to local school districts. The purpose of the legislation is to help ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards and assessments.
Title I funds may be used to support schools at or above the average poverty rate of the school district as determined by the percent of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Funding to local school districts support Title I Schoolwide and Targeted Assistance programs, depending upon the level of poverty and school-based decisions.
Program initiatives include intervention services (literacy and math), professional development, parental involvement, and pre-kindergarten programs. In addition, there are required set-aside funds to support School Improvement efforts (Choice and Supplemental Educational Services), District Improvement, and Homeless initiatives.
