Thursday is Picture Day! This is the annual day all students have their picture taken for our school yearbook, cumulative records as well as a way for you to capture their time at this particular grade level. We all remember our pictures from elementary school! Pictures will be available for purchase as usual and this is an easy way to give back to our school since a portion of all picture money goes directly back us.
Here are this week’s announcements:
We are only one week away from kicking off the RUN WITH ROAREE! Next TUESDAY our PTA’s 2-week fundraising program will begin! We’ll start with a Pep Rally, then each Lockhart family will have time to get pledges, and then every student will participate in the RUN WITH ROAREE!
This year, our goal is to raise $10,000 for NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT and we need your help! Please begin thinking about friends and family who could pledge your student for the RUN WITH ROAREE. Look for a pledge book to come home on our PEP RALLY DAY to learn how to pledge. And don’t forget to save the Fun Run Day--THURSDAY September 3, 2015—on your calendar. You’re invited to come out and cheer on our students! Thank you for supporting LOCKHART!”
Finally on Monday a very important Technology and Digital Resources Consent form went home with all students. Please read over the form and indicate your decision then return it to your child’s teacher. Returning forms on time is a great way to say “Thank You!” to your teacher for doing everything they do each day.
As always have a good evening with your family.

- On Thursday of next week we will have our annual Picture Day. All students will have their pictures taken for purchase as well as to be used in our School Yearbook. School Pictures are the only fund generators for all elementary school in Wake County. If you purchase picture some of proceeds go right back to our school.
- Starting August 25th PTA will be starting their BIG fundraiser of the year. This year our PTA will be working with Boosterthon to have a Fun Run with Roarie like no other. We will have 9 days of learning and excitement as we build up to September 3rd’s big FUN RUN. Look and listen for more information coming in the next few weeks. The Fun Run will support building more playground equipment for all of our students to use.
- Finally in your child’s Monday Folder there is a Wake County Consent for Technology and Digital Resources Use form. We are asking all parents to read over a consent form that all Wake County Public Schools are sending out and hopefully granting permission for your child to use the tools and resources that your child’s teacher feels are appropriate to teach your child. If for some reason you deny permission I would request that you discuss it first with your child’s teacher. Your denial of use will stop your child from using any technology or digital resource our school has to offer. Consent forms need to be returned as soon as possible. Thank you.

82514- School MessengerAt Lockhart we try very hard to communicate and have excellent customer service with all of our families. I wanted to take this School Messenger and discuss the essential ways to connect with our school.
With your child your first connection should be with their teacher. Your teacher should be sending out regular communication about the ongoings in their classroom. This should include items that are being taught, upcoming events, as well as how to support at home.
At Lockhart my expectation is that all staff, including your child’s teacher respond to communication be it email, voice message, or a call back request within 24 hours during regular business days. Teachers are very busy but we also know if you are trying to reach us we need respond within a reasonable time.
As a school we send out weekly school messages each Tuesday at 7:30pm. The only time when we would send out an additional message is if there is a very urgent item such as school being closed or a special situation. These school messages are also posted on our school website and are archived for your reference.
We also send out a every three week newsletter called the Lockhart Link. This newsletter is sent school wide and has valuable information as well as current themes at our school. Please take the time to read it to stay connected. We are working on the capabilities to post the links on our website as well.
Other ways we communicate are through our twitter feed @LockhartLions and through local newspapers. As well as we have parents sit in on many of our school-based committees such as our School Improvement Team.
At Lockhart we know and value parent connections to our school. Please make sure you are connected as much as you can be. We also more than happy to listen and change based on suggestions. On our website we have a suggestion form for you to support our communication abilities. We read everyone but we do ask you to let us know who you are so we can get details to know how to support.
I hope this School Messenger helps you understand how we try to connect with your family.
Thank you and I hope you have a good night with your family.

Thank you to all of our parents who came out to Open House last Thursday. It was great to see so many packed rooms. I know my teachers are definitely thinking about moving to larger spaces for next year. This was just your first chance to learn more about your child’s day to day life at Lockhart. I hope you enjoyed and I would love to hear any comments you have about how we can continue to improve as well as what you like about it.
Here are this week’s messages:
1. All students went home on Monday with our School Newsletter called the Lockhart Link. This is a newsletter that comes out about every 3 weeks. It is filled with information and items for you to stay connect with our school. I encourage you to read it over when it arrives home. One of the pieces this issue is a quarterly schedule of events so you can plan ahead to attend items like Math Night coming up on September 18th.
2. Attention all Kindergarten Families if you have not returned your immunization forms already you need to do so as soon as you can. Students who don’t have the immunizations forms in soon could risk the consequences of being suspended from school. If we can assist you please let us know.
3. Is your Carpool Tag RED? If not you have an expired CarPool Tag please stop by the front office and pick up your new carpool tag as soon as you can. We have a safety committee that is always looking to make our facility as secure as possible and the first thing all parents can do is follow our school policies and procedures.
Thank you and I hope you have a good night with your family.

Our Open House is this Thursday August 14th from 6-7:30pm. It will be an excellent time to learn all about expectations and curriculum for your child’s grade level for this school year. The same presentation will occur at 6:00 and at 6:45. Please choose the session that best meets your family’s schedule for the night. Repeated sessions are also provided for those families that have more than one child attending Lockhart.
Here the rest of this week’s messages:
1. Fall Pictures are coming soon on August 21st. Every student will have their picture taken for our school yearbook as well it is a great opportunity for you to purchase your child’s pictures to support our school. A good percentage of the total pictures purchases goes directly to supporting our school and our teachers and students.
2. Important Forms: We are in need for all families to send back the Student Information Sheets if they have not done so already. These forms are kept securely in our office and are our go to resources if we need to contact you for any reason.
3. All homeroom teachers are required to recruit a “room parent” for their class that will work with our PTA and support the class on many events. Check in with your child’s teacher on Open House to make sure they have someone. If they don’t think about being one for your child’s classroom. It is a huge help for our school and doesn’t take a bunch of time to volunteer.
4. Volunteer Registration is open right now. If you were approved last year you need to re-register again this year which only takes a minute or so and if you are new to Lockhart you need to register as soon as possible. Parents who are not registered volunteers cannot attend field trips or volunteer in the classroom. The approval process takes two-three weeks do it now so you don’t miss out. Computers will be available for registering on Open House Night as well.
Due Dates to Remember:
Kindergarten Immunization Forms are due August 26th
Thank you and have a good evening with your family.

We have completed the two biggest days of End of Grade Testing. I would like to personally thank all of the parents that volunteered their time to help proctor. We couldn’t have done it without your support.
Here are the rest of this week’s messages:
1. EOG Scores will be mailed to all families 3-4 weeks after testing has completed. I anticipate families receiving letters by mid July. WCPSS has asked all schools to follow this request and not release any initial results except for any 3rd Grade students who need to take the Read to Achieve Test. It is important with the scoring changes that have been implemented that the message going out to our county is the same. I know for a fact that the other two local Single Track 4 schools in our area are also following this procedure as well.
2. Did you read my Principal Message on this Monday’s copy of the Lockhart Link? If you didn’t check it so you are in the loop about how our Meet the Teacher is changing this coming school year. If you lost the Link you can read the same message on my Principal Blog on our website. All parents will receive their appointment in their child’s report card on the last day of school. In the letter it will also indicate what to do if you can’t make that time.
3. There are many celebration activities occurring next week make sure you check in with your child’s teacher so you can support, provide items or hopefully attend and have fun as well!
Have a good rest of your evening.

A Huge Thank You goes out to our wonderful PTA for making our teachers feel appreciated last week. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers that supported our annual Field Day it was another great success. We are now desperately seeking parent representatives for many positions at Lockhart and for our PTA. It is essential for our success that we have parents assume positions to help drive our school’s vision and PTA’s events. Stop what you are doing right now and email me [email protected] with your phone number, name, and children that attend Lockhart. I will then personally call you and discuss all of the possibilities available. We need you more than you know. Here are the rest of this week’s messages: 1. I am now accepting parent letters about next year placements for your children. Please make sure you write the letter describing the best environment for your child, not a particular teacher. All letters must be received by May 31st to impact placement. Emails are fine. 2. Kindergarten Orientation for all rising Kindergartners has been set for Thursday May 22nd from 6-7pm in our school Media Center. This night is for parents and their rising Kindergartner. 3. This Thursday is our Spring Musical please join us at 7PM we will start the event with a PTA meeting and then move on to the Musical. Also at 7PM registration for Before and AfterCare will open for the next school year. Stop and reserve your spot they fill up very quickly. 4. Finally on our website there is a link to a Parent Involvement Survey. Please take 5 minutes and complete it to help us best meet the needs of your family. 5. We will be honoring our local heroes on Friday, May 23rd during our student’s lunch time. Firefighters, police officers and representatives from our different branches of military will be joining our students. If you know of a hero who would like to participate please call our school and ask to talk to the counselor. I hope many of you highly consider assuming one of our many Lockhart Positions to help drive the education of our students or become an even stronger member of our PTA by taking a position on the PTA Board. Don’t think someone else will do it, they won’t because you are the someone else. I look forward to hearing from many of you. Have a good night. Attention Lockhart Families this is your weekly message from your school’s principal, Mr. Zoller. This message will be recorded in English as well as Spanish.
This next message is very important for all parents. The Wake County Public School System has decided to cancel the Make Up Saturday school for this Saturday March 29th. They have decided instead to make this Friday March 28th a full day of school rather than an Early Release Day. Again the WCPSS has cancelled this Saturday’s Make Up Day and has now changed our Early Release this Friday to a Full day of school. NO Saturday Activities will occur this March 29th. Here are this week’s messages: 1. This is our last week before we Track out. I know our teachers are working hard on making this last week count so we can finish the quarter strong. We will be tracked out from March 31st through April 22nd with a return date of Wednesday April 23rd. 2. Thank you to all the families for coming out our Science Night on Thursday, we had a great showing of families I hope all of you had a great time. A special thanks goes out to our PTA for sponsoring our dinner as well as Ms. Long for putting it all together. 3. Our Kindergarten seats for next year are filling up quickly and we are definitely ahead of our pace from last year for enrollment. If you have a rising Kindergartener or have a neighbor assigned to Lockhart remind them to register now so they don’t lose their seat. For more information on registration stop by our office or contact our Data Manager, Ms. Lohse at 919-266-8525. As always for more information you can visit our website at lockhartes.wcpss.net. I hope you and your family have a relaxing, fun, yet safe trackout. |

Attention Lockhart Families this is your weekly message from your school’s principal, Mr. Zoller. This message will be recorded in English as well as Spanish.
Thank you all for another successful Make Up Saturday School. With the extra 50+ cars in our carpool loop patience was definitely required. Ms. Lacy-Garner, our school’s Assistant Principal is working on tightening up the safety and flow of our afternoon carpool line. Two things you can do for us right now are:
1. Always take a right on Smithfield after picking up or dropping off your child. All you need to do is a right on Smithfield, a right on Forestville and then another right on Old Knight and you are back at Business 64. This is for the safety of all of our families and to create a smoother flow of traffic. New signage will be going up later this month.
2. If you don’t have a Carpool Tag and you use our Afternoon Carpool please come in and get a tag from the main office. You need a tag for all vehicles and adults authorized to pick your child up.
Here are a few more messages:
1. Tonight the School Board will be making a decision on how we will be making up the three days we missed of instruction last week. If a decision is made that affects your family before my next Weekly message I will make sure I inform all of you.
2. Lockhart has been participating in Jump Rope for Heart for the past three weeks. This activity has been taking place in their weekly PE classes. All students have been participating in the jump roping activities, as well as heart healthy discussions that can benefit themselves and others around them. Along with all the great learning the students have been doing, they also have been encouraged to go out and collect donations to benefit the American Heart Association. All donations need to be brought back to the school by February 21st. Thank you to all who have participated this year and we look forward to giving back to a great community partner like the AHA.
3. School Tours are starting up for rising Kindergarten Students. Please share with your friends and family in our community about registering their child at Lockhart and to sign up for one of our school tours on March 3 or March 24th. All they need to do to register is stop by and meet with Ms. Lohse anytime 7:30-4:30 daily.
Finally Class Pictures as well as Spring Pictures will be occurring next Friday February 28th. This was a particularly long message if you didn’t hear all of it please visit our website at lockhartes.wcpss.net. Thank you.

Attention Lockhart Families this is your weekly message from your school’s principal, Mr. Zoller. This message will be recorded in English as well as Spanish.
Parents I appreciated all of you staying informed with local news for our Snow Days last week. I hope your children had fun in this rare, for North Carolina, snow fall.
Here are this week’s messages:
Our make up days have been announced. They will be all on Saturday February 8th, February 15th, April 26th and May 3rd. Our School will run for ½ a day with our normal arrival time starting at 8:00am and instruction starting promptly at 8:30, our dismissal will begin at 12. Please make sure you have plans made to receive your child at our noon dismissal. If your dismissal routine for your child will change on these four Saturdays please notify your teacher as soon as you can.
Here are few extra details about our Make Up Days:
1. No Breakfast or Lunch will be served. All students are highly encouraged to bring a mid-morning snack with them.
2. For those parents who normally do not use our carpool loop in the afternoon and do not have a number can still use the carpool loop but please be ready to show ID if requested by a staff member.
3. Buses will run on their normal morning schedule. Please make sure if you have Kindergarten-2nd student that you have parent waiting for them at their bus stop starting at 12.
One other note about our Make Up Days- Like last year we had a tutoring program that ran on 8 different Saturdays. At this time if your child was selected to participate, the program is being suspended until we can restructure the scheduled based on teachers and available Saturdays and or alternative times. You will be notified when the program is restructured.
Thank you and have a good evening.

If you are interested in volunteering for the book fair, please visit our school’s website or call Melise Mountcastle at 919-306-3033 to volunteer.
2. Mark your calendar to come to our Math Blitz on Thursday November 21st from 6-7:30. This is a huge event for parents, students, and staff. Parents I was blown away by how many of you on a Friday Night, after Halloween during a torrential downpour came out to have fun at Lockhart. This just shows what a strong supportive Lockhart Community we have. Our staff and our PTA would like to send a special thanks to all the parents, teachers and boy scouts that made the night a success. We could not have done it without those volunteers.
Here are this week’s messages:
1. Early Release is this Friday. Make sure you have plans for your children being dismissed on Friday at 12:30pm.
2. On November 7th State End of Grade Scores will come out for all schools. These results are from a transitional year. The 2012-13 accountability results will not affect students’ grades or current placement nor will there be any school accountability labels or designations. It is very important to not lose sight of academic growth trends. We anticipate that while student proficiency rates have dropped, there will be a high percentage of schools making or exceeding growth goals. Student academic growth is an important factor in demonstrating the hard work of teachers. North Carolina has experienced decreases in student proficiency levels in the past when curriculum standards and proficiency levels have been raised and that student performance has rebounded in subsequent years. In addition, North Carolina is not alone. States that have adopted the Common Core State Standards and assessments also have seen similar results. In order for all students to be competitive upon graduation, we have an obligation to expect more from them. We know that they will rise to the challenge and be better prepared for career and college as a result.
If you would like more information, a background brief on the READY Accountability model, in addition to other information, is available on the Department of Public Instruction’s website, www.ncpublicschools.org. For students who in the coming weeks will receive individual scores information letters will accompany the results.
Have a good night.

I hope to see all of you at our Fall Festival this Friday night starting at 6pm. I have been able to listen in to the preparation meetings and it sounds like a really fun event for all families. Our PTA is still needing many more volunteers. To volunteer for this event visit our webpage and click on the Volunteer for Fall Festival Button on the Main page.
Here are a few announcements:
All parents driving their children to school in the morning must go through the carpool line. If you need to report to the office to drop off medicine or to get a carpool tag please park in the lot on the far side of school near the gym and walk in. Parents driving in the bus loop create a very unsafe environment for all. Please refrain from driving in our bus loops during arrival and dismissal.
Finally I wanted to alert all of our families that last year’s test results from the new Common Core State Standards test will be coming out on November 7th. It is highly anticipated that the proficiency rates across NC including WCPSS will fall drastically compared to the old Standard Course of Study Test. Comparing the two tests is not appropriate since the new tests students took last year was considerably harder consisting of content with higher levels of rigor and expectations including higher levels for passing scores. High expectations are always a good thing and as a community of staff, students and parents we will look at our results and continue to adjust and improve to offer an excellent education at Lockhart Elementary.
Parents will be informed of their students’ scores soon after the release date of November 7th.
I hope you and your family have a safe week and I look forward to seeing many of you at Friday’s Fall Festival starting at 6pm.

What a great showing we had on Tuesday at Open House it was really great seeing all of our families excited about learning about their classrooms. A big thank you goes out to our hard working PTA for providing a great ice cream social as well as a great presentation to our community on how to be part of our school and our PTA. Here are our important announcements for this week.
1. Picture Day is Thursday for all students. All students will have their picture taken even if they don’t order any photos. These pictures will be used for school ID badges as well as to be placed in our Yearbook. Your support of Picture Day helps up fund many of our school’s programs and materials.
2. Three new Website Buttons were added to our school’s website to help assist parents with questions. If you have a suggestion to add something to our website we would love to hear it. The new buttons link you to school lunch menus, a Real Time Bus Transportation Update, and a link to our Monthly events calendar.
Finally a quick reminder that Monday is Labor Day and all WCPSS are closed. Have a good evening.

Our schedule tonight starts at 6:00-6:45 each Grade Level will put on a Presentation about curriculum, expectations, and events/activities for this school year to inform their families about what to expect. Presentations will last about 20-25 minutes. Then a PTA meeting will occur in the Gym at 6:45. A repeat performance of each grade level performance will occur at 7:15 for parents who couldn’t attend the early session or have multiple students at Lockhart.
Signs will be posted around campus where each presentation will be occurring. Other than 3rd grade all presentations will be a room close to where you grade level is located. 3rd Grade will be holding their presentations in our Media Center.
Tonight all of our families can choose if their children are attending or not, although the presentations and PTA meeting are geared for parents; we don’t want families to not attend because they can’t find childcare.
We hope to see many families out tonight. Our PTA will also be having an ice cream social between 6:30-7:30 for all families~located at the Picnic tables outside the art room.
Don’t forget that this Friday is our first early release, all students are dismissed at 12:30 and Picture Day is right around the corner on Thursday August 29th. Remember buying pictures during this event really helps support projects at our school.
For more information including the map for tonight’s event please check out our website at lockhartes.wpcss.net

The Lockhart Student Handbook is located on our school's website. Please take time to
review it with your child. Hard copies are located in our Main Office for checkout if
needed.
Our building is at full capacity with all of our Kindergarten students starting on Monday
our next item to improve is our dismissal efficiency. We hope to have our carpool and
buses running up to speed by the 15th of this month.
We do need help from all parents:
1. Always display your carpool tag.
2. Help us help your child with remembering their number or bus route color.
3. Do Not check out your child after 2:45pm. Classes are preparing for dismissal

What a great start to the school year we had! This school year you can expect to get a weekly Message from me every Tuesday at 7PM. Please take time to listen to the message and if you don’t hear everything, our messages are also on our school’s website.
Here are our important messages for this week.
1. I would like to congratulate all of our Carpool Parents for making the Morning Carpool change work really well. Safety is our first priority and we hope this change really improves safety during Morning Carpool.
2. We also appreciate everyone’s patience with dismissal. We just want to make sure everyone goes home safely and do that right you must first go slow.
3. I would like all parents to work with their children at home to remember their bus color and/or their carpool number and phone numbers. The more you help the quicker our dismissal will run.
4. Kindergarten Meet the Teacher is Friday at 3:30. This time will allow you to find out who your child’s teacher will be, drop off school supplies, and allow us to answer every question you may still have.
5. Mark your calendar for August 20th at 6pm-8pm for our Open House. This will be a time to spend time with your child’s teacher and learn about curriculum and exciting events in your grade level. A PTA meeting will also be at held at 7:00 PM along with an Ice Cream Social.

What a great event Friday’s field day was and it was all because of Mr. McLaney, our supportive staff as well as this event couldn’t have happened without the 70+ parents who came to volunteer. It was a proud day for our community of Lockhart Lions! If you have field day photos you would like to share with our school you may use the link located on our main webpage or send them to us on twitter @lockhartlions or using the hashtag lockhartlions.

2. If you are interested in our Before and Afterschool care for next year registration begins on Thursday at 6PM. Don’t miss out on getting your spot locked for next school year.

Not only are we going to be treated to a great 1st grade performance of “The Box” as well as a musical instrument performance from several select 5th graders we will also be voting on our new slate of PTA board members. It is essential for our school to have a minimum of 12-15 parents to volunteer to become our new slate of officers. We also have an open parent rep seat on our School Improvement Team, PBIS team, Title I, and Board Advisory Council. There is a place for every parent here at Lockhart and we need every one of you. We just finished with our first round of End of Grade Testing today. Track 1 students have completed the Math and Reading tests. Track 1 5th Grade students will complete the End of Grade Science Test next week. I really appreciated every parent who got their child well rested and ready to perform at their best! Here are this week’s important announcements:
1. Ms. Roach, our music teacher, is still looking for volunteers for 1st grade's production of “The Box” if you are interested in helping please call the front office or email Ms. Roach.
2. Any parent who would like to write a letter letting me know the type of environment their child thrives in can do so from now until May 31st. You can write a letter and mail it to me, drop it off in the front office or with child’s teacher, or send an email to me directly. These letters will help us place your child with their next teacher. Please do make sure you specify the environment and not the teacher. Letters requesting individual teachers instead of learning environments will not be accepted.
3. Do you know that next Thursday is your chance to make your thoughts and ideas come to life? Next Thursday @ 7PM is our annual PTA board elections. We need 12-15 parents to step up and take charge in making Lockhart an even better learning environment for all. Don’t let a vital component of Lockhart be left in anyone’s hands but your own.
4. We need all parents to complete our Title I survey by June 1st. You can locate the survey on our website going to the “For Parents” tab and then clicking on Title I. The survey will also be emailed by your classroom teacher. Please take the 2 minutes to fill out this important survey.

We have a bunch of great things happening at Lockhart.
- We are working on improving morning Carpool: Two arrival lanes have occurred and just like afternoon dismissal they merge close to the drop off area. If you are a carpool user please start using both lanes and then merging right before the first staff parking row. We all have legitimate reasons of why need to get to where we need to go, but please continue to be considerate of others and model the Golden Rule.
- We started Jump Rope for Heart Event on February 18th and it will continue to run through March 1st. Your children are doing some amazing jumping in their PE classes and we want them to continue. Please encourage and help them to raise money for the American Heart Association. The collection envelopes are due back on or before March 1st for track 1 and March 8th for tracks 3 and 4.
- Our Big Event on February 28th Math Madness Night is next week. The first 100 families that night participating will receive a free regulation size basketball. All families can send back Monday’s flyer slip reserving them dinner for their family as well as every participant will walk away with prizes to make us all better Math Students. DON’T MISS OUT! Starts at 6PM in the Gym.
- Awards shows are coming up soon. To see when our award shows are occurring please look at our Master Calendar on our website.
